How to Rotate Tires

Front and rear tires wear at different rates — fronts steer and (on most cars) drive and carry the engine. Rotating evens the wear so all four tires last longer and grip consistently. It takes about 45–60 minutes with a jack and stands, or it's often free with an oil change.
A car supported only by a jack can fall — use jack stands on firm, level ground before working around a raised wheel, and never put any part of your body under the vehicle. If you don't have stands, most tire shops rotate cheaply or free with other service.

Front-wheel drive: forward cross — fronts move straight back, rears cross to the opposite front. Rear/4/AWD: rearward cross — rears move straight forward, fronts cross to the opposite rear. X-pattern (all four cross) works for most FWD cars too. Directional tires (arrow on the sidewall) only swap front-to-back on the same side; staggered setups (wider rears) only swap side-to-side. Your owner's manual shows the approved pattern.
Step 2: Park level, brake set, hazards if roadside
Work on firm, level ground. Put the car in Park (or first gear), set the parking brake, and chock the wheels that will stay on the ground first.
Step 3: Loosen all lug nuts first
Break every lug nut loose — about a half turn counterclockwise — while the wheels are still on the ground. Don't remove them yet.
Step 4: Lift the car onto jack stands
Lift at the factory jack points (see your manual) and set the car on jack stands. To rotate all four at once you'll need to support at least one full side — or do one axle at a time, which requires moving wheels to temporary positions.
Never work around a wheel supported only by a jack. Stands on level, solid ground are non-negotiable.
Step 5: Move each wheel to its new position
Following your chosen pattern, remove each wheel and remount it in its new spot. This is the moment to check tread depth and look for nails, uneven wear, or sidewall damage on each tire.
Step 6: Hand-tighten in a star pattern
Thread every lug nut by hand first, then snug them in a star (criss-cross) pattern so the wheel seats evenly against the hub.
Step 7: Lower and torque to spec
Lower the car, then tighten each lug nut with a torque wrench to your manual's spec (commonly 80–100 ft-lb) in the star pattern. A final firm pull with a lug wrench is the fallback, but a shop should verify torque soon.
Step 8: Set pressures and reset the TPMS if needed
Front and rear pressures sometimes differ — inflate each tire to the door-jamb sticker for its position. If your car tracks sensor positions (many GM and Ford models do), run the TPMS relearn procedure in your owner's manual so the light reports the right corner.
