Can I use plain water?

In summer, short-term, yes. Water freezes at 32°F and can crack the reservoir and split the lines — anywhere it snows, use a winter blend rated to −20°F or below. Plain water also cleans worse and can grow algae in the tank.

Why not just add dish soap?

Dish soap foams, streaks the glass, and is hard on the pump and rubber components. Washer fluid costs a few dollars a gallon — it is the wrong place to save money.

How often should I fill it?

Check monthly and before road trips. Winter slush burns through a tank fast — a week of salted highways can empty it.

The jets are not spraying — now what?

Clear the nozzles with a pin first; wax and grit clog them often. If you hear no pump hum at all when you pull the stalk, check the fuse, then the pump itself — both are cheap parts.

Washer fluid contains methanol, which is toxic — keep it away from kids and pets, and wash your hands after pouring. Beyond that there is little to get wrong here. If a full tank still will not spray, the fault is a clog, fuse, or pump — a cheap fix, but one to hand to a shop if the basic checks fail.
