Is a 3-point turn legal everywhere?

Why turn the wheel before moving?

'Dry steering' while stationary puts some wear on tires and steering components, but at crawling speeds it's the standard taught method: it guarantees you take the tightest possible arc and removes the guesswork of when to turn. The wear from occasional maneuvers is negligible.

What if the road is too narrow for three points?

Add more points — there's no prize for doing it in three. Each reverse-and-forward cycle with full opposite lock gains you more angle. Just re-check traffic before every leg, and if the road is genuinely too tight, back into a driveway or side street to turn instead.

What do examiners look for in a driving test?

Only attempt a 3-point turn where it's legal and you can see clearly in both directions — never on a hill crest, a curve, a highway, or near an intersection. You will cross both lanes: you must yield to everyone. If traffic appears mid-maneuver, stop and let it pass.
