Can I use plain water in an emergency?

Yes, in an emergency — distilled is preferred because tap water leaves mineral deposits. Get back to a proper 50/50 mix soon: straight water freezes at 32°F, boils sooner, and corrodes the inside of the engine.

Does the coolant color matter?

Color is just dye, not a spec. Match the chemistry in your owner's manual — OAT, HOAT, or IAT — because mixing incompatible types can gel and clog passages. When in doubt, a dealer's parts counter can look up the spec by VIN.

How often should coolant be flushed?

Per the owner's manual. Modern long-life OAT coolant commonly lasts 5 years or 100,000 miles; older green IAT coolant needs changing every 2–3 years.

Why does my coolant level keep dropping?

Coolant does two jobs — it keeps the engine from overheating in summer and from freezing solid in winter — and checking it takes ten minutes with no tools at all. One rule matters above the rest: the system is pressurized when hot, and opening it then can scald you badly. Everything else is just reading marks on a plastic tank.

Never open a radiator or reservoir cap on a hot engine — coolant runs above 200°F and flashes to steam the instant pressure releases, causing severe burns. If the level drops repeatedly, or you see oil or rust in the tank, have the system pressure-tested; topping off is maintenance, but chasing a leak is diagnosis.
