How to Replace a Car Battery

Batteries last 3–5 years, and swapping one is a 15–25 minute job with basic tools. The two things people get wrong: terminal order (negative off first, on last — always) and losing their radio presets and settings (a memory saver prevents it). Here's the whole job.
Car batteries are heavy (30–50 lb), contain acid, and can short violently if a tool bridges the terminals. Always remove the negative terminal first and reconnect it last, never let a wrench touch both terminals (or the positive terminal and any body metal), and never lean over the battery. Hybrids and EVs have high-voltage systems — this guide covers the 12V battery only; if you're unsure, use a shop.

Park on level ground, engine off, keys out, parking brake set. Put on gloves and eye protection. Remove metal rings and watches — a shorted battery terminal can weld jewelry instantly.
Step 2: Locate the battery and note its orientation
Most batteries live under the hood, but some are in the trunk, under a seat, or in a wheel well — check your owner's manual. Before touching anything, note which way the terminals face; the new battery must go in the same way. A quick phone photo is cheap insurance.
Step 3: Optional: plug in a memory saver
A memory saver (a small 9V or 12V device that plugs into the OBD-II port or a 12V socket that stays live) keeps radio presets, clock, seat memory, and learned engine settings alive while the battery is out. Skip it and you'll simply re-enter presets afterward. Note: some vehicles (many BMW, Mercedes, VW/Audi models) also need the new battery 'registered' with a scan tool — check your manual.
Step 4: Disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal first
Loosen the nut on the negative (−, black) terminal clamp and lift the clamp off. Tuck it aside so it can't spring back onto the post. Negative first means that if your wrench accidentally touches body metal, nothing happens — the circuit is already open.
If you remove positive first and your wrench bridges the terminal to any metal part of the car, you get a direct short: sparks, heat, possibly a burned hand or damaged electronics.
Step 5: Disconnect the positive terminal
Now loosen and remove the positive (+, red) clamp and tuck it safely aside as well. Keep the two clamps from touching each other or any metal.
Step 6: Remove the hold-down bracket
Every battery is secured by a clamp, strap, or bracket — usually one or two bolts at the base or a bar across the top. Remove it and set the hardware somewhere it can't roll away.
Step 7: Lift the old battery out
Grip the built-in handle (or both sides) and lift straight up with your legs, not your back — it's 30–50 lb. Keep it level: it's sealed, but cracked cases leak acid. Place it on the ground, not on paint or concrete you care about.
Step 8: Clean the tray and cable clamps
Scrub corrosion off the cable clamps with a wire brush (a baking-soda-and-water paste fizzes it away — see our corrosion guide) and brush debris out of the tray. Clean metal means good contact and full charging.
Step 9: Set the new battery in and secure it
Lower the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one — terminals the same way. Refit the hold-down and snug it: the battery should not be able to move at all, but don't crush the case by over-tightening.
Step 10: Reconnect POSITIVE first, negative LAST
Attach the positive (+) clamp first and tighten it, then the negative (−) clamp. Both should be tight enough that you can't twist them by hand. Start the car, confirm the warning lights behave, reset the clock and presets, and take the old battery back for recycling — the store refunds the core charge, and it's illegal to trash them in most places.
Reconnection is the mirror of removal: positive on first, negative on last. A small spark at the final connection is normal — that's why it happens at the negative, away from the battery's vented gases on some designs, and why clamps go on posts, not tools left resting on the battery.
