Why do you disconnect the negative terminal first?

The whole car body is connected to the negative terminal. Remove negative first and the circuit is open — a stray wrench touching metal is harmless. Remove positive first and that same slip creates a direct short circuit through your wrench: sparks, burns, and fried electronics. Reconnect in reverse: positive first, negative last.

How do I know which battery to buy?

Match the 'group size' printed on your old battery's label or listed in your owner's manual — it defines the physical dimensions and terminal layout.
