Front Defrost Indicator

OK to driveTypically Amber (illuminated) on the dash

Front windshield defrost is on — full heat and fan to the windshield, A/C compressor drying the air.

What it means

Confirms max defrost mode. The A/C compressor runs even in winter because dry air clears fog fastest. If the windshield fogs again immediately after you switch back, your cabin filter or recirculation setting may be the issue.

Can you keep driving?

Yes — but never drive with a fogged or icy windshield 'peephole.' Clear it fully first.

What to do now

  1. 1

Use full defrost with fresh (not recirculated) air for fastest clearing.

  2. 2

In winter, clear ALL glass before moving — peephole driving causes crashes and earns tickets.

Likely causes

  • Defrost mode selected

Typical fix cost

$0; persistent fogging may need a $20–$50 cabin filter

Ranges reflect mainstream US parts-and-labor pricing; your vehicle and region will vary.
